Council bans new head shops from town

Gordon Deegan

A council has voted to endorse a planning ban on any more head shops in their town.

The move by councillors in Ennis, Co Clare, follows the town's two head shops being vandalised within a 24-hour period.

A garda spokesman confirmed that the 'Harmonisation' head shop in Parnell Street car park was broken into between 4.30 and 4.40am yesterday.

The counter and front door were smashed. There was cash on the premises, which was not taken. Gardai recovered a hammer from the scene.

Last week, Ennis's other head shop, 'The Laughing Buddha' in the Chapel Lane area, was closed on foot of Circuit Court interim injunction secured by the building's landlord. However, gardai confirmed that in the early hours of Sunday, the shop was broken into and ransacked.

At the council meeting yesterday, Cllr Paul O'Shea cond-emned the attacks.

"We don't want to see people taking the law into their own hands," he said.
