An elderly Cork woman has been reunited with a treasured momento of her late husband after Gardai recovered her handbag which had been stolen while she was shopping.

Breeda (82) is said to be thrilled to have recovered the treasured note.

Her daughter Edel told the Irish Examiner that the family are "just so thankful to everybody who played a role in recovering her handbag".

Breda was in Dunnes Stores in the Ballincollig Shopping Centre last Wednesday when her handbag was stolen. Edel reported that her mother was "distraught" over the robbery, and that she felt violated by the theft.

Breda's husband Donal passed away 28 years ago and wrote the love letter some 60 years ago. Breda has kept the letter close for over six decades.

The Irish Examiner report that the two wed when Breda was 20, having met when she was 17. Donal was working as a travelling salesman and wrote love letters to Breda from the road.

Breda's family began a campaign on social media to reunite Breda with the note and CCTV footage from the shopping centre helped Gardai identify a suspect and ultimately track down Breda's beloved note.

Emer said the family "would especially like to thank the staff at the shopping centre, the security guards, the local gardaí and Emer Cassidy of AIB Ballincollig who all helped. We are just so grateful".

An investigation is ongoing.
