Cork market takes the cake

Take a stroll through Cork's English Market and you will see the place piled high with spiced beef, local cheeses and smoked fish. It kind of suggests that they prefer savoury over sweet in the real capital.

But that doesn't tell the whole story. Because Cork's little secret is that the place runs on sugar. Or, to be more precise, on cakes.

So if you do find yourself in the market, pop in to Healy's Bakery at the Grand Parade entrance. Alongside delicious cupcakes and marshmallow logs, you will find Russian log, custard slices and that great Cork classic, donkey's gudge -- it's a great winter pick-me-up with a mug of tea.

And don't worry if you start talking double speed after the sugar hit. This is Cork. They're all at it.
