ONE of the leading contenders to become the next Garda Commissioner has been appointed to a top post in the Garda Inspectorate.

Mark Toland joined the Garda oversight body, GSOC, last December where he served as one of the body’s three commissioners.

GSOC announced on its website today that Mr Toland will now take up the post of chief inspector at the Inspectorate, where he previously served.

Mr Toland is among a small number of individuals being tipped to take over as Garda Commissioner.

In a statement, GSOC said:

"GSOC benefited greatly from his insights into and commitment to police oversight over the past year. Mark was also instrumental in leading out an important business transformation project within GSOC."
