A north inner city councillor has labelled a tweet saying "I am the cartel" by Conor McGregor as "immature", given the number of murders caused by the Dublin gang war.

The UFC star was responding to a screenshot sent to him by boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, which referred to an allegation that McGregor had been involved in a brawl with a Kinahan cartel associate.

Mayweather, who defeated McGregor in a boxing match in Las Vegas last August, tagged 'The Notorious' on Twitter on Wednesday night.

The undefeated fighter wrote: "I already f**ked you up in 2017, now they about to f**k you up in 2018.

"You're about to start the New Year off with a bang."

McGregor then tweeted his apparent tongue-in-cheek response, "I am the cartel".

However, city councillor Christy Burke, who has seen first-hand the suffering the crimes of the Kinahan cartel had caused in the north inner city, said the comment was not funny.

So far 13 deaths have been linked to the Hutch/Kinahan feud, several of them in Cllr Burke's constituency.

He told the Herald he hoped McGregor didn't make a habit of such comments.

He said he believed McGregor to be a good role model and family man.

"It's immaturity," Cllr Burke said. "I would hope that Mr McGregor refrains from such comments that could or might lead some of his supporters to believe it's OK to be part of a cartel.

"I would imagine it's an off the cuff comment and is just a tit-for-tat between McGregor and Mayweather.

"I would hope that's all it is - because he comes across as a decent family guy.

"It's a wrong remark to make. The slogan 'think, think, think' comes to mind before you make such a remark," he added.

Gang boss Daniel Kinahan also responded to Mayweather's tweet, laughing off any potential pub brawl between McGregor and cartel associates.

Daniel Kinahan wrote: "Now now, @floydmayweather should not believe all you read in the paper. Must be looking for a rematch against @NotoriousMMA".
