Cong turns back time for 'Quiet Man' memorial

THE clock will be turned back next weekend when scenes from the iconic movie 'The Quiet Man' are recreated in Cong, Co Mayo.

The village on the Galway-Mayo border is marking its association with the 1951 production, which starred John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, by the unveiling of a statue.

Directed by John Ford, 'The Quiet Man' was shot mostly in Cong and Connemara, and the Cong Festival each year marks the village's association with the movie.

Next Sunday, the statue, cast by sculptor Mark Rode, will be unveiled. It will be located close to the Royal Abbey in Cong.

Over the weekend, location tours will take in Castletown Railway Station, The Quiet Man Bridge, as well as a visit to The White O' Morn Cottage site.
