Compensation for Magdalene survivors
Q SURVIVORS of the Magdalene laundries have received compensation payments averaging at €36,500.
The Dail's Public Accounts Committee heard that 724 women had applied for compensation.
It was told 327 letters of formal offer had been issued and 250 had been accepted.
Compensation payouts to 224 survivors so far have totalled €8.2m.
Department of Justice secretary general Brian Purcell said €23m had been set aside to meet claims. Nine staff in the department are engaged full time on the redress scheme.
