Investigations are underway into the hacking of a Limerick-based college website by a group styling itself the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) terror group.

A message posted across the website of the Central College Limerick yesterday morning read: "THIS WEBSITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY THE ISLAMIC STATE IN SYRIA (ISIS)."

The message also warned: "IRELAND EXPECT US".

The college website has been shut down after the hacking was brought to college authorities.

Management are now seeking information about how the website was infiltrated.

A photograph of an ISIS fighter armed with a machine gun and carrying an ISIS flag while dressed in black also appeared on the website.

The college has so far not been available for comment about the matter.

The Central College Limerick is a College of Further Education providing a range of courses from full-time day courses, part-time evening courses and courses under the Back to Education Initiative in the Mid-West Region.
