A coastguard helicopter will be dispatched early on Wednesday morning to assist in a medical evacuation of an injured crewman aboard a Russian fishing vessel 250 miles out at sea.

The coastguard at Valencia was alerted by UK authorities who requested the coastguard take co-ordination of the operation. It is understood that a man aboard the vessel is suffering with internal bleeding caused by an ulcer.

A coastguard spokesman said a number of factors would had to be considered in assisting the man. The operation is made more difficult by the fact the vessel, which is moving toward Castletownbere in Co Cork, is so far out at sea.

It was decided not to launch any operation this evening due to unfavourable conditions.

Rescue helicopter 115 will now be dispatched at 7.30am Wednesday morning when it is estimated the vessel will be 180 miles off the south west coast. The Air Corps will also provide assistance in the operation.

It is the second time in a week a Russian vessel has requested coastguard assistance.

On Friday another fisherman required a medical evacuation after injuring his arm.
