Singer Niall Horan and Hollywood star Jamie Dornan got into the swing of things ahead of the Ryder Cup as celebrities battled it out before the main event.

Le Golf National in Paris witnessed the celebrity nine-hole warm-up event as a host of familiar faces from Europe and the US enjoyed balmy sunshine in France.

Ireland has a storied history in the Ryder Cup and singer Horan and actor Dornan were joined by Irish rugby hero Brian O'Driscoll in the European team.

Other notable competitors included Olympian Michael Phelps, politician Condoleeza Rice, soccer star Alessandro Del Piero and surfer Kelly Slater.

Despite a good start for the European team, the Americans proved too strong and eventually won 15-13.

"Hopefully we started the week off good for the boys, and they go out and get the job done," said 23-time Olympic gold medallist Phelps.

Europe will hope that this is not a sign of things to come as the serious golf gets under way on Friday morning. The US team go into the event as the defending champions.
