Club goes to court over pitch

AN amateur soccer club says it is facing being kicked out from its home pitch to make way for a supermarket, a court has heard, writes Tim Healy.

Ballybofey Utd have played at Finn View Park, Chestnut Road, in the Co Donegal town since 1971. But the owners of the grounds, Butt Hall Trust, want to sell the land to Aldi, which intends to construct a new store on the site. Planning permission has been granted by Donegal County Council.

The trust claims it asked the club to vacate the site in April but says it has failed to do so. It claims the club is trespassing.

In the High Court, the trust, whose mission is to provide entertainment and education to the people of the town, is seeking an injunction forcing the club to vacate the lands. Mr Justice Paul Gilligan is expected to give his decision next week.
