Climbers rescued after running out of rope

A GROUP of climbers was rescued from a mountain last night after running out of rope, writes Brendan Farrelly.

The five members of the group began their climb of a difficult gully on Lugnaquilla Mountain in Co Wicklow shortly after 7am yesterday.

But about three hours later they hit trouble when they ran out of rope. A fellow climber was initially called with extra equipment and rope in an attempt to help them, but that proved unsuccessful. They then put out a call for help.

Five members of the Dublin Airport Authority Fire and Police Services were hill-walking in the area at the time. They spotted the drama unfolding and alerted mountain rescue.

Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and Glen of Imal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team joined forces in the valley below. They sent up trained specialists who brought a couple of hundred metres of rope and equipment with them.

As dusk fell the climbers finally made their way out of the gully and off the mountain.
