Clerys to remain closed for “coming days”

Aishling Phelan

CLERYS will remain closed for several more days while attempts to assess the full extent of damage caused by last week’s thunder storms continue.

The iconic Dublin store has been shut for six days.

A spokesperson for the store told the Irish Independent that the extent of the damage is still being examined and no date for its re-opening has been set.

Last Thursday, the store closed immediately after a night of torrential rain and thunderstorms.

“Clerys Department Store had incurred significant water damage during last night's storm, works continue to assess the full extent of damage, and consequently the Department Store will remain closed over the coming days,” a spokesman for the shop said the morning after the harsh weather.

It is understood that the store on Dublin’s O’Connell Street suffered structural damage following the torrential rain.

Part of the roof collapsed forcing the shop to remain closed.

Last week, Cork and Dublin were hit by torrential rain, thunderstorms and flash flooding overnight, with thousands of homes left without electricity.
