Clerys confirms it will remain shut ‘over coming days’

THE famous Dublin department store Clerys will remain closed over the coming days while attempts to assess the full extent of the damage caused in last night’s thunderstorms continue.

“Clerys Department Store had incurred significant water damage during last night's storm, works continue to assess the full extent of damage, and consequently the Department Store will remain closed over the coming days,” a spokesman for the shop said this evening.

It is understood that the store on Dublin’s O’Connell Street suffered structural damage following the torrential rain on Wednesday night.

Part of the roof collapsed forcing the shop to remain closed this morning.

However, Clerys denied reports that roof repair work may have compromised the ceiling.

The Dublin Fire Brigade responded to the incident during the night and staff gathered outside the O'Connell Street store earlier today as they heard the news.

Clerys Commercial Director, Simon Smith said, ‘‘This morning at approximately ten minutes past midnight, the Clerys Department Store on O’Connell Street, Dublin, incurred damage during a heavy period of rainfall combined with thunder and lightning.’’
