Claire Grady has stepped down as editor of the Irish Independent.

The Mayo native told staff yesterday that she has decided to vacate the role with immediate effect.

Ian Mallon, Group Head of News, will take on the editor's role on an interim basis.

Ms Grady is a previous editor of The Herald and has worked in various positions for Independent News and Media (INM) over the past 27 years.

Editor in Chief of INM Stephen Rae praised Ms Grady for her contribution over that period, but particularly for her dedication to this title for the past year.

"I would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Claire Grady for her work as editor of the Irish Independent," he said.

"Claire was the first female editor at the Irish Independent and played a major role in developing the title and in leading the rollout of the new production system at the title.

"We wish her the very best with her future plans."

A recruitment process to appoint a new editor is being initiated and the position will be advertised shortly.
