Cian sets off for equestrian honeymoon

THIS honeymoon might be a little more crowded than most.

Irish international showjumper Cian O'Connor (32) will whisk his new wife, Ruth Maybin, to Florida -- along with six of his best charges.

The pair are due to combine Cian's work at the winter equestrian festival in Palm Beach, Florida, with their honeymoon. The newlyweds will travel to England for a few days before he heads to the US this month to compete for 12 weeks at shows between January 11 and April 1.

Mr O'Connor, whose Karlswood Stables are based outside Ashbourne in Co Meath, has revealed he sent six of his "best horses" to Florida last week for his onslaught on the US jumping circuit, where the prize money on offer is lucrative.

"It will be an ideal venue to build partnerships with some new horses and is a perfect training ground for my younger horses to develop to Grand Prix level. I'm very fortunate to have six fantastic horses to bring and am really looking forward to the trip," Mr O'Connor said.

On New Year's Eve, Mr O'Connor, who has made over 80 Nations Cup appearances for Ireland, wed model Ms Maybin in a ceremony at the beautiful Clongowes Wood College in Clane, Co Kildare, before they enjoyed a reception at the K Club.

The groom said the date was picked "because it's the perfect way to kick off the new year".

Among Mr O'Connor's equine partners on the Florida circuit will be Ballymore Eustace, purchased in 2010 by Jim Bolger and Mel Sutcliffe, and the recently bought Blue Lloyd, who the showjumper believes may just be the best horse he has ever ridden.
