A MAN has died after getting into difficulties diving off the south coast yesterday afternoon.

The group were diving at Whiting Bay, near Ardmore in Co Waterford, when the man's two friends called in the emergency services around 3.30pm.

The Waterford-based helicopter was on a training mission and was swiftly on the scene at Goat Island, which is on the mainland.

The 32-year-old man, who was originally from Poland, was winched aboard the emergency services helicopter.

The emergency crew attempted CPR en route to Waterford hospital.

They arrived at the hospital just after 4.15pm but the man was pronounced dead shortly after.

The exact circumstances of the incident were unclear last night.

Gardai who were examining the case were treating it as a tragic accident.

The man was in diving gear at the time he was winched aboard the helicopter.
