Choir chief's death ends century of family link
THE sudden death of choral director Oliver O'Brien on Sunday severed almost a century of his family's connection with Dublin's Pro-Cathedral. His brother Colum, also one of the Cathedral organists, died earlier this year.
Son of Vincent O'Brien, Radio Eireann's first director of music and founder of the Palestrina Choir in 1902, Oliver was music teacher at Carysfort College for most of his career.
Organist and director of the Palestrina Choir from 1946 to 1978, he was also chorus master of Our Lady's Choral Society from 1948 to 1979.
His funeral takes place from Dublin's Pro-Cathedral following 11am mass this morning.
