Chip shop raiders take battering from plucky staff
TWO armed raiders got more than they bargained for after trying to rob a chip shop.
The would-be robbers left empty-handed after coming under fire from salt and vinegar bottles thrown by two brave female staff.
Erica Loughran and her assistant Victoria Pronina were working at the Genoa takeaway in Balbriggan when the raiders struck.
One of the masked men was armed with a knife and the other with a metal bar as they tried to climb over the counter.
“I don't know how they expected me to react, but I shouted at them and started throwing vinegar bottles and salt shakers at them and they ran out the door,” Erica told the Herald.
Two female customers also witnessed the terrifying incident on Sunday night.
Gardai are investigating the terrifying raid, which took place while the two women were alone in the chipper.
Erica, who owns the business, said that the men wore masks and seemed nervous.
“These two guys came in with their faces covered.
“One had a kitchen knife and the other had a metal bar, but they weren't very convincing and we thought they were messing,” she said.
“They shouted ‘Give us your money' and I said ‘Yeah, are you serious?' and told them to go away.
“But then one of them started climbing over the counter to the cash register and then I knew they were serious,” Erica said. “At that point I got really angry.
“We work hard here and
don't make much. We have two-for-one specials to try and improve the business and maybe these guys thought we had a lot of money,” she said.
The two raiders fled through a housing estate in the direction of Pinewood Green.
Gardai have yet to make any arrests and have appealed for anyone who might have seen something unusual in the area at around 10pm on Sunday to come forward.
The suspects are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s. CCTV from the Balbriggan area is being studied as part of the investigation.
“At this stage, gardai are working on the theory that the suspects are locals,” said a source.
Erica and Victoria, who is from Lithuania, were not fazed by the attempted raid, but said they would now increase security in the takeaway.
