Parents have already begun the hunt for this year's Christmas toys, with stores stocking up on what will be the most sought-after gifts.

Star Wars figures, robotic pet birds, and a game that delivers a plate of whipped cream to the face of the unlucky recipient are among the favourites, according to Smyths Toys.

Figures from the new film, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', such as Darth Vader, Chewie and Kylo Ren also topped the list along with Lego sets and video games.

"Star Wars is always going to be massive. There's a lot of hype around it and the movies look incredible so I think that hype is going to carry the toy range all the way up until December when the film is released," said Rob Guckian, for Smyths.

Another popular trend is the toys to life range including Skylanders and Lego Dimensions that feature physical toys that can be hooked up to games consoles.

Other toys on the list include Ski Scooter Z7, Little Live Pets Clever Keet, a robotic bird that can talk, sing and dance, and the Our Generation Hair Play Doll Phoebe.
