Children take the tech tablets 21 hours a week
Irish children are spending 21 hours a week using tech devices compared to a meagre four hours on after-school activities such as sport.
Under-16s use up almost three hours each day glued to devices such as smartphones and tablets, according to the Family Togetherness Index carried out by Center Parcs Ireland.
A survey of 500 parents found that three out of four under-16s have at least one device with tablets the most popular (56pc), followed by smartphones (47pc).
Commenting on the findings, Dr Colman Noctor, a child and adolescent psychotherapist, said: "Quality time spent as a family unit is a key contributor to the overall happiness a family feels.
"In the contemporary world, however, it is not unusual to observe families who all spend meal times on devices communicating with other people and all watch TV in separate rooms."
