Charlie to give opera fans taste of chocolate
IT'S the subject of a celebrated book and two movies, but now music fans have the chance to see an operatic version of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', writes Conor Kane.
The opera, called 'The Golden Ticket', is based on Roald Dahl's much-loved children's novel. It will be one of the highlights of this year's Wexford Festival Opera, which runs for an extended 15 days next October.
The production is having its European premiere in Wexford at the insistence of the author's widow, Felicity Dahl, a long-standing fan of the festival.
The programme for the 59th year, which was announced yesterday, will feature 'Virginia' by Saverio Mercadente and 'Hubicka' (The Kiss) by Bedrich Smetana as its main operas.
The 2010 festival is to take a break with tradition by opening on a Saturday.
