Centra has issued an apology after a "distressed" customer reported that she saw a rat in a Limerick city store.

A woman phoned Live95 FM and said she spotted a "large" rat near the deli counter in the Centra on Upper William Street.

She alerted staff who immediately dealt with the issue.

CCTV footage showed the rat entered from the street through the main door of the shop.

Centra said it immediately contacted its pest control contractors and reported the incident to the Environmental Health Officer.

A spokeswoman confirmed that the animal has been "disposed" of appropriately.

An inspection was carried out by the health officer and trading resumed as normal.

In a statement to Independent.ie, Centra said: "Centra is committed to maintaining the highest food quality and safety standards. We would like to apologise to customers of Centra Upper William St. for any distress caused however it is important to note that this was an isolated incident beyond our control and all procedures were followed appropriately."
