Cash row puts ironman event in jeopardy
THE Irish Ironman competition, which has attracted thousands of athletes, is in jeopardy as a result of funding pressures.
The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), which runs Ironman events, has dropped Galway from its 2013 listings in a dispute over funding.
Organiser Eoin McCormack revealed the event would not go ahead next year unless more funding was committed by the State.
The triathlon secured €65,000 from Failte Ireland for each of the past two events, but that is well below the funding expected by the WTC.
"Every other city that hosts an Ironman event invests €250,000," said Mr McCormack.
