Caroline distraught as Rory breaks it off
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI is said to be "utterly distraught" after her break-up with golfer Rory McIlroy.
The Sunday Independent has learned that McIlroy ended the relationship with the former world number one tennis star after more than two years together.
The sad break-up has been described as "very difficult" for the couple, but in particular for Wozniacki who was besotted with the 24-year-old golfer. They had been dating since they met at a boxing match in Germany in 2011 and their very public romance charmed the world.
The twice major winner is believed to have initiated the split, but has stopped short of making the news public.
A source close to McIlroy told the Sunday Independent yesterday: "They're done, it's over." He was asked by the New York Post on Friday about the relationship, following his second round at The Barclays event in New Jersey.
However, instead of announcing any break-up, he said: "Uh-huh, yeah, it's all good. Just because we changed our Twitter profile picture doesn't mean that we're not together. But yeah, it's all good." The golden couple's amorous postings to each other on Twitter had legions of followers, and fans became concerned when they changed their profile pictures on the networking site to solo photos of themselves rather than "him and her" shots.
The split is a sudden one.
The couple attended a friend's wedding in Fermanagh in July.
The same month, Dane Wozniacki, 23, revealed that she and McIlroy had a new family member — a puppy called Bruno.
The tennis star posted a picture of the dog on her Twitter page, saying: "So excited to extend our little family @mcilroyrory!! Bruno can't wait to see you!!" McIlroy has endured a tumultuous year both on and off the golf course, failing to capture an anticipated third major championship. After he withdrew from the Honda Classic in February, he struggled at the US Masters and finished two over par and in a tie for 25th place.
He also failed to make the cut at the Open Championship at Muirfield in Scotland where he shot his worst 36-hole score at a major championship and missed the cut by four shots.
As well as losing his world number one status, he surprisingly announced he was leaving his Irish management team, Horizon Sports Management.
Wozniacki was McIlroy's second long-term girlfriend.
He ended a six-year relationship with childhood sweetheart Holly Sweeney in 2011.
He then began his romance with Wozniacki in 2011, but they were often on the other side of the world from each other because of their differing schedules in the global sports of golf and tennis.
Wozniacki owns an apartment in Monaco and McIlroy has regularly publicly referred to it as "home". But earlier this month he showed off a chic new home in south Florida.
"I felt it was the right time to get a base here, somewhere I could come between tournaments.
I really liked [the house] because it's very modern, very contemporary, very bright, white walls everywhere.
That's what drew me to it," said McIlroy.
