A retired landscaper who became his elderly father's carer has scooped €21,000 on an online scratch card.

Peter Galligan, of Artane, has vowed to put the win towards paying bills and helping him and his family care for their 84-year-old dad.

His mother, who has Alzheimer's, lives in a nursing home.

Mr Galligan was delighted when he collected his winnings from National Lottery HQ yesterday.

"I play online National Lottery games occasionally and tried my luck with the new Jewel 7 Doubler game," he said. "I could not believe it when I saw that I had won.

Holiday

"It was only when I got an email confirming the win that I really believed it. It's brilliant news."

He said the amount of money meant a lot as his parents were sick.

"I'll get some family members to cover for me so I can take a week off and I'll head to Spain for a holiday," said Mr Galligan.
