Canny publican driving his customers to drink

A PUBLICAN is fighting back against the recession by driving his customers to the drink.

With lifestyle changes and new drink-driving limits hitting his business, Alan Gielty, owner of Gielty's bar and restaurant on Achill Island, Co Mayo, realised he could not sit back and "hope for the best".

Instead, he invested €26,000 in a minibus to offer customers a free collection and drop home service, day and night.

Alan's gamble has paid off. On Friday, there were 38 customers in the bar -- 30 of them arrived and left in the bus, emblazoned with the logo 'You Drink, We Drive'.

"The days are gone when you can sit back. You simply have to make an effort.

"I pick up people in the courtesy bus anytime of the day that the pub and restaurant are open," he said. "There are no restrictions. If they want to come in for one drink fine."

Alan's initiative was recently rewarded with a Leading Light in Road Safety award by the Road Safety Authority.
