Camera catches man stripping off at church altar

GARDAI are trying to identify a man who stripped off and sat almost naked on a church altar.

The bizarre incident came to light on St Patrick's Day at Cill Mhuire Church just outside Newbridge, Co Kildare, when the parish curate was reviewing CCTV footage.

According to the footage, the man spent more than two minutes sitting almost naked on the altar before putting his clothes back on and leaving. Investigators are unsure if the man kept his underwear on.

No arrests have been made. It is understood that gardai are struggling to identify the man and ascertain the registration number of a car he used to leave the scene, because of the poor quality of the footage.

The curate examined through the CCTV footage after theft from a collection box.

Gardai said yesterday the thieves got away with "a small amount" of money, and that the two incidents were unconnected.

The footage was passed on to gardai by Father Ruairi O'Domhnaill and it has been reviewed to see who tried to steal a donation box and shrine collection.

A spokesman for Newbridge garda station said the matter was under investigation and the identity of the intruder was unknown. They appealed for anybody with information to contact the station.
