THE country recorded one of the wettest days of the year yesterday – and the bad weather isn’t set to let up just yet.

Yesterday, many areas experienced unrelenting heavy rain from early morning right through the night.

However this morning most areas experienced a brief respite from the downpours, with sunny spells in many areas.

However further heavy showers moved in over the early afternoon.

Most of the country will experience further heavy downpours into tonight, with a risk of thundery patches in many areas.

Monday is shaping up to be the best day weather-wise of the bank with the rain clearing overnight.

“Monday will be a much dryer, brighter day, with sunny spells”, Met Eireann said.

There will be some scattered showers in the west however, but they are not expected to be as persistent as over the last 24 hours.

Getting out of bed for the return to work on Tuesday will be difficult, as the heavy showers are expected to return on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

These showers will clear later on Tuesday morning to give a bright and clear afternoon.

Early indications suggest that next weekend will be mild – although temperatures won’t reach the high teens like the good spell of weather at the end of April.
