Calls for new body to approve promotions
GARDAI have warned that a perception of political interference in the promotion of officers in the force will not be eliminated until a new police authority has been created.
General secretary of the Garda Representative Association PJ Stone said promotions currently had to be approved by the Government. He believed a new commission should be tasked with looking at this, as well as pay and other issues.
Meanwhile, Mr Stone did not agree that the decision of the delegates not to applaud Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan after his address had been disrespectful. He said there had been no plan to remain silent and it was "just one of those things".
He pointed out that the delegates had applauded Mr Callinan after the Q&A session and he believed there had also been applause prior to that.
