Business as usual at hotel where weekend rates are up to €313pp

A ROOM this weekend at the Mayo castle will set you back anywhere between €143 and €313 per person, per night, or €330 for a family room.

There are of course special offers -- a midweek two-night stay for two people with breakfast and one dinner comes in at €450.

Guests enjoy ample opportunities for fine dining, particularly in the George V Dining Room, originally built by the Guinness family to entertain guests during the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1906.

Here, the menu of chef Stefan Matz will set you back as much as €39 for a starter of Connemara lobster, €15 for a bowl of prawn bisque soup and €39 for a roast crown of local spring lamb.

There is also the famed afternoon tea, while less-formal dinners are usually enjoyed in the nearby Cullens At The Cottage, a thatch-roofed establishment on the grounds.

Visitors this Christmas will be treated to chamber music on arrival, a Christmas day punctuated by golf, and cruises on Lough Corrib, Ireland's second-largest lake. There will also be a gala dinner with midnight mince pies and mulled wine.
