Bus Eireann confirms 95pc of its services 'disrupted'
THERE IS traffic chaos around the country with Bus Eireann confirming that over 95pc of services are disrupted due to the strike action by workers.
Approximately 50,000 customers usually travel on routes across the country on a Sunday.
But Bus Eireann said the vast majority of services around the country are not operating due to industrial action.
Cancellations include all buses in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Clare, Kerry and in the greater Dublin area as well as several intercity routes.
There is a limited service between Dublin and Belfast, Donegal, Derry, Cork and some routes are open in the north-west.
Services from Dublin will operate from Custom House Quay or pick up on Georges Quay.
"Bus Eireann apologies for any inconvenience caused due to this industrial action," a spokesman said.
It advised customers to visit buseireann.ie for updates in the coming days.
The strike, which centres on a row over payroll savings of five million euro, is expected to cost Bus Eireann 200,000 euro a day.
The strike is being carried out by workers affiliated to the National Bus and Rail Union.
Half the number of drivers at the company are affiliated to SIPTU.
In previous disputes with Bus Éireann, SIPTU members have not passed pickets.
A spokesman for Bus Eireann Andrew McLindon, said it appeared that members of other unions including SIPTU are not passing pickets.
Speaking on RTÉ's Marian Finucane Show, Mr McLindon said that the financial position of the company is precarious.
“Today’s disruption to Bus Éireann passengers is deeply regrettable," Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said.
“The unions should immediately engage with the company in talks, to bring this matter to resolution. My understanding is that the company is available to engage with the unions, and has been available for many days.
"We must all work together to save Bus Eireann services and jobs. There is no time to lose."
