Burnt-out car may be linked to cash-van raid

GARDA forensic teams were last night attempting to sift through the rubble of a burnt-out car that was discovered filled with empty cash boxes.

The abandoned vehicle was found at 4.30pm yesterday at Dunbro Lane, St Margarets, near Dublin Airport.

The car was an Audi A4 and gardai have launched an investigation to determine whether the discovery could be linked to a raid on a cash-in-transit van that occurred on nearby Collins Avenue East in the Clontarf area yesterday at around 2pm.

The van was on a coin-run so it's understood there was not "a huge amount" of money on board. Gardai seized the vehicle and are examining both it and the scene.

There has been a spate of raids on cash-in-transit vans. the last occurred in Trim, Co Meath, about a week ago in which a security man was left recovering from head injuries after two raiders fled empty-handed following the botched robbery at a shopping centre.
