One of the country's most well-known pub owners has passed away.

Nan Brennan passed away yesterday surrounded by her loving family, friends and neighbours, according to the Donegal Daily.

The much-loved publican ran Brennan's Criterion Bar in Bundoran with her sister Patricia.

The famous pub has remained the same in style and set-up since it was opened in the 1900s by the sisters' grandparents.

Brennan's Bar became a landmark spot in Donegal and beyond, and featured in a Guinness advert earlier this year.

According to one local photojournalist, the sisters "ran the bar by themselves often refusing an offer to help change a keg."

Matt Britton paid tribute to Nan Brennan on Facebook, writing; "As news emerged this afternoon that Nan Brennan had passed away there was deep sadness not only in the town but throughout the country.

"Nan along with her sister Patricia ran the legendary Criterion Bar, simply known as "Brennan's" which became famous worldwide as perhaps one of the most genuine Irish bars in the country. Though both in their golden years the sisters ran the bar by themselves often refusing an offer to help change a keg.

"Nan will be deeply missed by those who were privileged to know her. Deepest sympathies to Patricia and her extended family - Bundoran has lost a truly great woman."

Nan Brennan's death notice reads; "Nan, along with her sister Patricia, ran Brennan's Criterion Bar in Bundoran for a lifetime, this famous pub opened in the 1900s by the Brennan family and in all those years remained more or less the same, run by the two famous sisters, it became a landmark place in Bundoran, where customers both local and visiting were always sure of a warm and friendly welcome. Nan, along with her sister Patricia, are regarded as highly esteemed members of the community, and as her family prepare to say goodbye to their beloved sister, we as a community prepare to say goodbye to one of Bundoran's much loved citizens.

"A lady that will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all."

Nan's family have requested family flowers only, but have asked that donations if so desired go to the Renovation Fund at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Bundoran care of Conlan - Breslin Funerals, Bundoran.
