Bullet-proof battle to free trapped men
FIREfighters had to cut through reinforced glass yesterday to rescue two security van workers after their truck crashed and overturned in icy conditions.
Armed gardai threw a cordon around the crash scene to protect the van following the accident near the village of Avoca, Co Wicklow.
The accident happened around 1pm on the Conary to Avoca road, about a half mile from the Avoca village. The Group4 Securicor van overturned onto its side in what rescuers described as treacherous conditions in the area.
Two units from Arklow Fire Brigade and an ambulance were sent to the scene and a spokesman said that even the rescue vehicles had difficulty reaching the crash site.
Firemen spent 20 minutes cutting through the bullet-proof windscreen to rescue the two trapped men, who were eventually pulled from the vehicle and treated for minor injuries.
