Brothers find ice way to raise funds for lifeboats

Edel O'Connell

TWO hardy brothers got a taste of Arctic life when they spent a surprisingly warm night in an igloo.

Rory (37) and Eoin (36) O'Connor were so impressed by the craftsmanship that went into the sturdy igloo, which was constructed by some local men on Duncannon beach in Co Wexford, that they decided to spend the night inside to raise funds for RNLI lifeboats.

Rory, who is a lifeboat volunteer, said it was important to remind people that lifeboat crews go out in all types of weather.

The pair brought along some special clothing and sleeping bags to brave the weather in.

Rory said: "We are honestly delighted with the response from the public to our sleepover. People were dropping by the igloo all night to say hello and drop some money in the bucket.

"We even had a local pub send down some hot whiskeys to keep us warm. It was actually quite comfortable and we even managed to get a good night's sleep. It was surprisingly warm, almost too warm!"

The brothers emerged the following morning in good spirits and enjoyed a cooked Irish breakfast on the beach.

So far they have raised more than €1,500 for the lifeboats.
