TWO brothers were being questioned by gardai last night after they were caught red handed with a sub-machine gun, writes Tom Brady.
Gardai believe the weapon was to have been used in a gangland 'hit' in Limerick.
The two suspects, aged 20 and 34 and from Limerick, are believed to have been transporting the high-powered firearm from the north-east region to the city.
The Sten sub-machine gun was recovered by members of the Emergency Response Unit, who intercepted the brothers as they travelled southwards along the M1 Belfast-Dublin route on Wednesday night.
They were arrested south of Dundalk, at Drumleck, Castlebellingham, Co Louth, and are associated with a major criminal figure in Limerick.
The machine gun was loaded with a magazine but it did not contain any ammunition.
Gardai from Dundalk arrested the two men and brought them to Dundalk and Drogheda garda stations.
