Bringing home the bacon . . . who said pigs can't fly?

THEY have their own woolly jockeys, the bookies shout out the odds and you can place a bet on them.

And although it might not go down too well with animal rights activists, pig racing proved one of the biggest attractions at a Co Sligo festival yesterday.

Hundreds thronged the small town of Tubbercurry for the opening of the Heritage Festival which culminates on Wednesday with an Old Fair Day.

Organisers of the festival said its aim is to transport its visitors back in time.

On Wednesday, marking the 25th anniversary of the Old Fair Day, dozens of craftsmen and women will display their skills and sell their wares as organisers strive to surpass last year's record 10,000 visitors.

Our pictures, by James Connolly, show the pigs in full flight and, inset, the winner crossing the line.
