Brave TD devastated as her dad (82) dies
A DAIL Deputy battling a devastating illness is trying to cope with the sudden death of her father.
Longford Westmeath TD, Nicky McFadden only recently spoke of her shock at being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
Yesterday, she and her family were being comforted following the sudden death of her father Brendan, a former Mayor of Athlone and Westmeath County Councillor.
Mr McFadden of Dun Ard, the Batteries, was 82 and died in Athlone. He is also survived by his daughter Gabrielle, the current Mayor of Athlone.
He retired from Westmeath County Council in 2003 when his daughter Nicky was co-opted to the local authority.
Mr McFadden will lie in repose at the Strand Funeral Home in Athlone today from 5pm, until removal at 7.45pm to Saint Peter and Paul's Church, arriving at 8pm.
He will be laid to rest in Coosan Cemetery following 11am mass on Wednesday.
Tributes were yesterday paid to Mr McFadden, who was pre-deceased by his wife Kitty.
Nicky McFadden (49) recently vowed to press ahead with her duties as a government TD despite her diagnosis.
The mother-of-two said she remains fully committed to her work and the voters who elected her.
In an interview, she admitted that her children, Eoin and Caren, were 'devastated' when they were told the news. And she found it even more difficult breaking the news to her elderly father. "That broke my heart," she said. "That was very, very hard."
