Boy in miracle escape as jeep runs over his head
A two-year-old Wexford boy who is a cousin of the Carrickmines fire victims had a miraculous escape when a jeep accidentally ran over his head.
'I thought he was dead, I was standing there when it happened,' said the boy's mother who asked not to be identified.
She said a woman was driving the vehicle very slowly when the accident happened in the Mulgannon area as she turned in off the road shortly before lunchtime on Tuesday.
'It's a miracle, someone up there was looking after Jimmy,' she told this newspaper, 'you'd never think a two year old could survive after having his head run over.'
Last week, Jimmy's mother told how she had visited her relatives in Sandyford at the weekend following the terrible fire at a halting site in Carrickmines in which 10 people died, five of them her relatives who had strong connections to Wexford town and who are to be buried at Crosstown.
The distraught mother and her husband, who was driving behind the jeep when the accident happened, didn't wait for an ambulance, and took the child directly to hospital fearing the worst.
'Somehow there was nothing broken, they had to glue his wounds and use paper stitches. He's fine now although all his face is broken up from the tarmac.'
The mother said the woman who was driving the jeep had herself called the gardai to alert them to the accident.
'She's still in shock,' said Jimmy's mother.
