A 16-YEAR-OLD boy was seriously injured when his quad bike struck a sheep which suddenly crossed his path as he travelled along a rural road.

Fergus Condon, pictured, was riding the high-powered vehicle shortly after 3pm on Tuesday near the village of Newcastle, Co Tipperary.

The teenager was yards away from the entrance to the family farm when a stray sheep dashed out in front of him.

He attempted to swerve out of the way, but the quad bike overturned, leaving him injured on the road.

Fergus suffered multiple injuries including to his head and neck, and was airlifted to Cork University Hospital.

He was due to sit his Junior Certificate English exam at the Central Technical Institute in Dun- garvan yesterday.

His elder brother, Will, was believed to have been on his way home from Australia, where he lives. Fergus's family have been keeping a vigil at his bedside, where he remains in intensive care.
