Boy, 7, critical after falling into river

A YOUNG boy was in critical condition in hospital last night after falling into a flooded Cork river.

The seven-year-old slipped and fell into the Owencurra River in Midleton, Co Cork, as he played football with friends.

The river was in heavy flood and the boy was swept downstream for a distance. His friends raised the alarm and a local man managed to rescue the boy from the river.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital where his family is maintaining a bedside vigil.
