A young boy is fighting for his life after being taken unconscious from a swimming pool in east Cork.

The three year old was discovered floating in the pool in Youghal, Co Cork shortly before lunchtime today.

Swimmers were shocked to realise that the child was floating face down in the pool and immediately dragged him to safety.

Emergency cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed on the child before he was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

It is understood the child is now in a critical condition.

Gardai are examining the scene but the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

It is understood the child and his family were in east Cork for a family holiday.

Initial reports indicate that they are not from the area.

It remains unclear precisely how the accident occurred.

Youghal is one of Ireland's most popular seaside destinations thanks to award-winning beaches and major restaurant and hotel infrastructure locally.
