Boy (16) loses fight for life after being struck by a van

A teenager has died after being struck by a van while crossing the road.

The boy (16) was struck on the Clane Road, Sallins, Co Kildare, at about 7.45am on Monday.

He was rushed to Naas Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in hospital last night.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was on the Clane Road or in the area between 7.40am and 7.45am on Monday, and particularly any motorists with a dashcam, to contact Naas garda station on 045 884300.

Meanwhile, a pensioner has died following a collision between a car and a bus in Co Cork.

The incident happened on the R600 at Ballinacourty, Belgooly, shortly before 10pm on Monday.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the car at the time.

Nobody on the bus was injured.

The pensioner's body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem.
