A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man in Derry.

Gerard Quinn (24) died after he was assaulted in the Milldale Crescent area of the city on Saturday night.

Local politicians said a house party descended into violence and the victim may have been stabbed in the neck with a bottle.

Police were called to the area at around 10.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Quinn was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead later. A post mortem is due to take place today.

Another 24-year-old man also received injuries in the incident, however they are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested shortly after midnight and was brought to Strand Road Police Station for questioning.

Detective chief inspector Michael Harvey said: "At this time it is my belief that there was some sort of altercation in the Milldale Crescent area."

He appealed for anyone with information to contact police and said detectives had already received an excellent response with a good number of people coming forward to provide important information.

Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said his thoughts and prayers were with the family and friends of Mr Quinn.
