Boy (16) and woman rushed to hospital after being hit by trailer

A 16-year-old boy and a woman in her 40s are in a serious condition after being struck by a trailer in Dundalk.

The collision occurred on Avenue Road near the town centre at approximately 8.50am this morning. 

The female casualty was airlifted to St James' Hospital in the capital due to the severity of her injuries, while the teenage boy is currently being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co Louth.

Both casualties are described as being in a serious condition.

The scene on Avenue Road has been sealed-off by Gardai and diversions are in place.

A technical examination of the scene is also expected to be carried out later today.

A lorry flat bed, which was being carried on a trailer, remains at the scene. It is understood that the trailer was being towed by a four wheel drive.

Extensive damage has also been caused to a telegraph pole on the footpath beside the crash site.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet clear and will form part of the garda investigation into the collision.
