A teenage boy died in a drowning accident in the River Liffey yesterday.

The incident happened at approximately 2.30pm between Islandbridge and Chapelizod in Dublin.

The garda sub-aqua unit later attended the scene, and the young man's body was taken from the water at 4pm.

It is understood he was 13 years of age.

The exact details of how the young man entered the water were not clear yesterday.

Sinn Fein councillor Daithi Doolan expressed his "deepest sympathy" for the family and friends of the young man.

"Please, please be careful near water," he added.

The death is being treated as a tragic accident.

The boy's remains have been removed for a post mortem.
