Book rental for schools urged
EDUCATION Minister Ruairi Quinn wants all schools to introduce book-rental schemes -- and save parents up to 80pc of the cost of buying new books.
It could reduce the annual bill for hard-pressed families by hundreds of euro. The cost of school books varies from about €60 for an infant class pupil up to €150 in sixth class at primary level.
At second level, the costs are usually most expensive for first year, at €350, and fifth year, at about €500.
A new Department of Education survey shows that 76pc of primary schools already operate book-rental schemes.
