Bomb threat forces closure of motorway

Paul Melia and Anne Madden

COMMUTERS were forced to use alternative routes across the border after a security alert closed the A1/M1 motorway yesterday.

The PSNI closed the road shortly before midnight on Thursday after warning calls about bombs were made to a charity and hospital near Newry, Co Down.

A suspicious vehicle was being examined yesterday on the A1 at Cloughoge, a PSNI spokeswoman said, adding that the main Dublin-Belfast road was closed between Sheepbridge, north of Newry, and Junction 18 at Ballymascanlon, north of Dundalk.

No properties had been evacuated.
