The army bomb squad had to carry out a controlled explosion on a pipe bomb that was left outside a house in Clondalkin in the early hours of this morning.

Gardai who had been called to the Monksfield Lawn area contacted the Defence Forces when they carried out an initial examination of the device.

The army deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team in response, and they arrived on scene at 3.30am.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a number of nearby houses were evacuated while the bomb squad examined the device.

The pipe bomb was made safe at the scene by  controlled explosion, and all component parts were handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation into the incident.

The scene was then declared safe at 4.45 am.

This was the 34th call out of an Army Bomb Disposal Team in 2014 dealing with 15 viable devices so far this year.
